Responding to the ongoing trial of Prof. Usman Yusuf, a widely known critic of the Nigerian government, Isa Sanusi Director Amnesty International Nigeria said:
“Amnesty International is deeply concerned by what appears to be targeting of Prof. Usman Yusuf solely for his criticism of the Nigerian government. His trial appears to be politically motivated.”
“The Nigerian authorities must stop weaponising the ‘fight against corruption’ to harass and intimidate dissenting voices, and instead uphold the rule of law and the human rights of everyone in the country.”
“The rights of Prof. Usman Yusuf to liberty and fair hearing must be guaranteed and upheld. The fight against corruption must not be tilted towards silencing critical voices. Instead of investing vainly in desperate attempts to punish peaceful dissent, the Nigerian government should listen to critics and address the growing cases of insecurity, corruption, and mismanagement in the country.”
