Stop Incitement to Violence Ahead of the Osun State Election
We urgently call on the Nigerian authorities to investigate allegations of incitement to violence ahead of the 15 August 2026 Osun State governorship election. Political differences must never become a justification for violence, threats or other human rights violations. We call on the Inspector-General of Police to ensure a prompt, impartial and thorough investigation and for anyone found responsible for a criminal offence to be held accountable. Sign the petition and demand urgent action to prevent election-related violence in Osun State.
What’s the problem?
Ahead of the Osun State governorship election, video footage circulated online appearing to, Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, making remarks that appear to advocate violence against political opponents.
Senator Fadahunsi has denied calling for physical violence and said that his comments were taken out of context. The Osun State Police Command has questioned him over the remarks. However, questioning must not be the end of the matter. Allegations of incitement to violence must be promptly, impartially and thoroughly investigated.
Advocacy of hatred that constitutes incitement to hostility, discrimination or violence can put lives at risk and has no place in an electoral process. The Nigerian authorities must take urgent steps to prevent election-related violence and protect the human rights of everyone, regardless of their political affiliation.
Political parties also have a responsibility to reject incitement and ensure that their members, candidates, campaigners and supporters do not engage in advocacy of hatred that constitutes incitement to hostility, discrimination or violence.
We are calling on the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that the allegations are fully investigated and that anyone found responsible for a criminal offence is held accountable in accordance with the law. We are also calling on political parties to publicly reject incitement and take clear steps to prevent their members and supporters from promoting violence.
Together, we can demand urgent action to prevent violence and ensure that political participation in Osun takes place without threats, intimidation or human rights violations.
