Amnesty International urges Nigerian authorities to investigate widespread violence unleashed on voters in parts of Lagos, Rivers, Kano, Edo and Delta states. Those behind attacks on voters, journalists and electoral officials must be brought to justice through fair trials.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Amnesty International Nigeria, we issue this statement to fully refute the allegation that the Country Director, Osai Ojigho was sacked from her position based on wrongdoing. This is not true. The organization investigated the complaints made against her at various times and concluded that the issues raised were entirely unfounded and she was cleared of all allegations. We also refute the allegations made against the organisation and our staff that there were breaches of Amnesty International’s work. Reacting to the news that two Nigerian communities, which have been devastated by oil spills, have filed claims against Shell at the High Court in London, Amnesty International’s Head of Business and Human Rights Mark Dummett, said:

As the world commemorates International Day of Education today, Amnesty International condemns the abduction of 6 primary school pupils in Doma, Nassarawa state. In the early hours of Friday, 20 January 2023, gunmen abducted 6 pupils, 3 girls and 3 boys aged 4-6 years of LGEA Primary School, Alwaza, Doma LGA, Nassarawa State. Four of the abducted pupils remain in captivity. This is the latest in a string of abductions of school children in Northern Nigeria. As of 2022, Amnesty International published that over 1,500 school children have been kidnapped by Boko Haram and bandit armed groups in Nigeria since the abduction of 276 Chibok school girls.
Amnesty International welcomes the release on 10 January 2023, of Oyewole Olumide, Rasheed Tiamiyu, Moruf Adekunle, Taoreed Abiodun, Ikenna Amechi, Afeez Ariyo, Ikechukwu Eze, and Adesina Ademuyiwa detained at Agodi Correctional Centre Ibadan, Oyo state for participating in #EndSARS protests in October 2020. The Oyo State Chief Judge ordered their discharge, acquittal, and release.
